ASTM standard rebar sizes are designated by eighths of an inch. A #4 bar is 4/8" (0.500" diameter). The table below lists standard dimensions and nominal weights per linear foot:
| Bar Size | Diameter (in) | Weight (lb/ft) | Nominal Area (sq in) | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| #3 | 0.375" (3/8") | 0.376 | 0.11 | Patios, sidewalks, residential crack control |
| #4 | 0.500" (1/2") | 0.668 | 0.20 | Standard 4"-6" driveways, garage floors, footings |
| #5 | 0.625" (5/8") | 1.043 | 0.31 | Commercial slabs, heavy vehicle pads, retaining walls |
| #6 | 0.750" (3/4") | 1.502 | 0.44 | Foundation grade beams, structural columns |
| #7 | 0.875" (7/8") | 2.044 | 0.60 | Bridge decks, high-load industrial floors |
| #8 | 1.000" (1") | 2.670 | 0.79 | Deep piers, heavy infrastructure foundations |
How to Calculate Rebar for a Concrete Slab
To determine rebar quantities for a rectangular two-way reinforcement mat:
- Deduct Edge Clear Cover: Concrete expands and contracts, and steel must be protected from soil moisture and air corrosion. ACI 318 recommends 2 inches of clear concrete cover on sides and bottom for ground contact. Subtract 4 inches total from both length and width.
- Calculate Bar Runs: Divide net dimension by grid spacing (typically 12" or 18" on-center) and add 1 for the starter bar.
- Calculate Total Linear Feet: Multiply the number of bars by their length in each direction, then add standard lap splice length (minimum 30 bar diameters) for runs exceeding standard 20-foot stock bar lengths.
- Determine Steel Weight: Multiply total linear footage by the ASTM nominal unit weight of the selected bar size.
