Geometric Concrete Volume Formulas

Construction pours frequently involve non-rectangular cross sections. Here are the core engineering volume formulas supported by this calculator:

1. Rectangular Prism (Slabs, Beams, Footings)

Volume = Length × Width × Depth

For imperial dimensions, convert all inputs to feet before multiplying, then divide by 27 for cubic yards.

2. Cylindrical Form (Sonotubes, Round Columns, Caissons)

Volume = π × (Diameter / 2)² × Height

Radius is half the diameter. In feet: π × r² × h / 27 gives cubic yards.

3. Trapezoidal Prism (Curbs, Retaining Footings, Barrier Walls)

Volume = ½ × (Width₁ + Width₂) × Depth × Length

Uses the average cross-sectional width multiplied by the uniform pour depth and total run length.

Concrete Density & Weight Factors

Standard unreinforced normal-weight concrete weighs between 145 and 150 pounds per cubic foot (approximately 3,900 to 4,050 lbs per cubic yard, or 2,350 to 2,400 kg per cubic meter). Knowing total wet weight is vital for formwork bracing design, shoring strength, and transport vehicle weight limits.
